Full-Time | 1099 Independent Contractor
We are seeking a qualified and professional Remote Sign Language Interpreter to provide virtual interpreting services to deaf and hard-of-hearing K12 students across New Mexico . This role supports equitable access to education by interpreting classroom instruction, school communications, and learning activities in real time using American Sign Language (ASL) via secure online platforms.
The interpreter works in collaboration with teachers, special education staff, and families to ensure full participation in the educational environment in alignment with each students IEP or 504 Plan.
Live ASL Interpretation :
Provide accurate, real-time interpretation of classroom instruction, discussions, assessments, and school-related events.
Adapt interpreting style to fit the students language development level, age, and academic content.
Collaboration & Preparation :
Review instructional materials and lesson plans with educators in advance to ensure effective communication access.
Attend IEP meetings or team planning sessions to align services with students' communication needs and goals.
Student Access & Inclusion :
Facilitate clear communication between deaf/hard-of-hearing students and peers, educators, and school staff.
Support students engagement, independence, and participation in academic and social settings.
Professional Standards & Ethics :
Maintain confidentiality and adhere to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct .
Follow educational interpreting best practices in accordance with New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) guidelines and IDEA requirements.
Education :
High school diploma or equivalent required; associates or bachelors degree in interpreting, deaf studies, or a related field preferred.
Licensure/Certification :
Valid New Mexico Interpreter Licensure through the New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department (RLD) or equivalent credential required.
EIPA score of 4.0 or higher or RID certification (NIC, CI/CT) strongly preferred.
Experience :
Minimum of 1 year of experience in educational or school-based interpreting preferred.
Prior experience providing virtual interpreting services is a plus.
Technical Skills :
Comfortable using remote platforms like Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams.
Able to navigate virtual interpreting software and maintain secure communication channels.
Strong expressive and receptive ASL skills
Cultural sensitivity and understanding of DHH community and student needs
Familiarity with IEP implementation and school-based accessibility services
